Traveling With Braces or Clear Aligners — What You Should Know
Whether you're heading out of town for a weekend getaway or planning a longer vacation, traveling with orthodontic appliances like braces or clear aligners doesn't have to disrupt your treatment. With the right preparation and a little foresight, you can stick to your routine and avoid issues—no matter where your travels take you.
In this guide, we’ll walk through everything you need to know about traveling while in orthodontic treatment, from what to pack to how to stay consistent with your oral care routine while you’re away from home.
What to Pack to Stay Prepared
Creating a small travel-friendly orthodontic kit can make your trip smoother and help you handle unexpected situations. You’ll want to bring a few oral care essentials, such as a soft-bristled toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, floss or floss picks, and a small bottle of mouthwash. If you wear braces, pack orthodontic wax and a proxy brush to clean around your brackets and wires. If you wear clear aligners, make sure to bring your storage case, a backup set of aligners (if available), and a small cleaning kit or tablets.
Keeping these items in your carry-on bag ensures you’ll have access to them even if your checked luggage is delayed or lost.
Stick to Your Routine—Even on the Go
When you're traveling, it's easy to slip out of your usual habits, but staying consistent with your oral hygiene and appliance care is essential for successful orthodontic treatment. If you have braces, be sure to brush and floss after meals to remove food particles and plaque buildup around your brackets and wires. For aligner wearers, rinse your aligners every time you take them out, brush them at least once a day, and remember to wear them for the recommended 20–22 hours daily.
Sticking to your routine while away from home helps keep your treatment on track and avoids setbacks or discomfort.
Eating and Drinking While Traveling
Eating on the go can pose extra challenges for orthodontic patients. If you have braces, avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that could damage brackets or wires. Instead, look for softer meal options like pasta, yogurt, cooked vegetables, or sandwiches that are easier on your braces.
For those wearing clear aligners, always remove them before eating or drinking anything besides water. It’s a good idea to carry a bottle of water and a travel toothbrush to clean your teeth before putting your aligners back in. Letting food or sugar sit between your teeth and aligners for hours can increase the risk of cavities and staining.
Dealing With Orthodontic Discomfort on the Road
Sometimes, despite your best planning, minor issues may arise while you’re away. If you experience irritation from braces, apply orthodontic wax to any sharp brackets or wires causing discomfort. For soreness, rinsing with warm salt water can reduce inflammation. In the case of a loose bracket or poking wire, you can use the eraser end of a pencil to gently tuck the wire back until you’re able to see your orthodontist.
If you’re wearing clear aligners and lose or damage a tray, contact your orthodontist as soon as possible. Depending on your situation, you may be instructed to move to the next set or temporarily revert to the previous one.
Special Considerations for Flights and Long Trips
When you’re flying or traveling for extended periods, the dry air in airplanes and changes in routine can affect your mouth and appliances. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, as a dry mouth can lead to discomfort and increase the risk of plaque buildup. Make sure to pack your orthodontic supplies in your carry-on, and don’t forget a spare aligner case or wax container in case you need it mid-trip.
If your trip will last for several weeks or more, it's a good idea to let your orthodontist know ahead of time. They may provide additional guidance or tools to help you manage your treatment while you're away.
